An Evening at Portland’s Wonder Ballroom
One of my goals after I quit my day job was to see more live music, since I could now afford to stay out cuttin’ rug all over town. I think I went to one live show, technically before I even finished my final month, and haven’t really kept up on my end of the bargain since then. I’m kicking off 2013 with better intentions, starting with Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside celebrating their new album, Untamed Beast, at the Wonder Ballroom.
I’ve never really gone to a concert with the purpose of shooting an entire set, but I love Sallie’s tunes and was asked to take a few photos. I didn’t have a lot of gear on me, and I didn’t have a lot of angles to work with, but I did have a total blast. Seeing Sallie headbang at the end of their set pretty much made my year in the middle of February.
With some more practice, I could totally see myself falling down this rock ‘n’ roll rabbit hole.
If you aren’t familiar with Sallie and her talented bandmates, I won’t even try to explain it. Just listen for yourself. Check them out on Spotify if you have to, then go buy their records. They’ll have you dancing in the living room while drinking white wine in no time.
[…] when I talk about concert photography being out of my element it’s obvious that I’m exaggerating a bit — I’m married to a musician, […]
I’m finally catching up with your blog and wow! These are great and it looks like it was a really fun show. I’m off to go listen to her music now. :D
Amaze! Amaze for these photos (music photography is never something I’ve been able to nail) and for the introduction to this kind of musical greatness.
Loving all of these! Thanks for introducing me to them, her voice is killer. Kinda has a Rev. Horton Heat feel, love!
Awesome! I love the lights and the colours of these!
These are all gorgeous, Kim now you are using a Mac system?
these pics are awesome!
I know a lot of crappy live music photographers and because of this I have grown weary of the genre because it’s just usually so, well, boring. But these…THESE photos are lively and vibrant and awesome. Kudos to you!
PS – I have recently discovered Sallie Ford & TSO and OMG THEY ARE AMAZEBALLS!!! I will be seeing them in my town in a mere 3 weeks as part of a local music festival. CAN. NOT. WAIT.
Jeez, Dawn! Thank you so much for the kind words — that is really flattering to hear! It definitely helps when you’re shooting a band that is as much fun as Sallie & Co. :)
And I’m super excited you’ll be catching them on tour! You’re going to have such a great time — they put on an amazing show.
Holy smokes Kim, these are crazy good! That first one, wow!
Killer frames Miller!
