Rowan & Dustin | Romantic Engagement Photos in Humboldt, CA

Ask anyone to describe Humboldt County and it’s more likely they’ll bring up the fog, Redwood forests and other things (ahem!) to mind before they mention the sun.

The day before I jumped on a plane out of town, the forecasts showed a heat wave ready to hit Portland. Smugly, I thought, “Sayonnara, suckers! I’m going to Humboldt!” and laughed at myself for packing a pair of shorts.

But, as karma would have it, it only rained once the entire 2 weeks I was down there. Though I had looked forward to my annual foggy workcation in Arcata, the unusual abundance of sunshine allowed Rowan and Dustin to brave HWY 299 and drive over for an engagement shoot. We took advantage of the amazing weather and hit up all the classic Humboldt scenes: the forest, the marsh, the grassy dunes of Mad River Beach and the quintessential Luffenholtz beach.

Our day together was so incredible that we wandered into the Community Forest and when we emerged on the other side, two hours had passed with the blink of an eye. After another hour walking the marsh (and being utterly terrified by harmless garter snakes) we knew it was time for an ice cream break at the Arcata Scoop before hitting the beaches.

It isn’t uncommon for days like this to feel like anything but work. Though I’m likely to come home with tired feet, wet socks and sand in my teeth, I’m always beaming by the end of it just the same.

What a wonderful Job you have done with capturing the emotions of these two beautiful people and also the many others here on your website. It is a joy to view them.

I envy you the weather :-) Here in Germany, this year we have 8-10° C and heavy rains all through May.
Seeing some sun for a change would be nice, so thanks for posting your glimpses :-)

You just kill me! And I love that you did the sun flare shot without the corny.
How does anyone hire any photographer other than you??

So much gorgeousness. I’m just gonna have to fly up there when my turn comes. :) That close up shot with flare + bokeh = fave.

Oh Kiiiiiim,

You are the best photographer on the planet. For serious.
