His Favorite Toy (Part II)

January 15, 2011

I feel like it’s been a million years since last Saturday, but my calendar tells me it’s actually been seven days. How strange.

This photo was shot with Cinna the same day as these and I’m pleasantly surprised it turned out pretty much perfect. I had a little stint where I was daring with trying to get shots of the cats doing more than just lying around like blobs, convinced that the photo would come out as a blob. Glad I took the chance.

Happy Caturday, everyone!

Amazing shot! I love it

I read that you use an Epson v500 (which I use too) and Your scans look awesome! I’ve been having trouble scanning (I’m still trying to get the hang of it and just cannot for the life of me get my shots to look good) If you don’t mind me asking what settings to you recommend when scanning in the epson software? I have been googling like a mad woman and just haven’t found any good info.

I scan using the “Professional Mode,” as opposed to the Home Mode. I’m not sure how huge of a difference there is because PM is all I’ve ever been taught to use. Hm. I really don’t tinker with the settings too much – I just make sure I scan at no lower than 1200 dpi (but not much higher than that, because I don’t get huge prints made and I’m too impatient to scan at mega-high resolutions!).

After the initial scan, I use the marquee tool to select each frame, click “Zoom” (where the scanner will take a moment to briefly re-scan the selected area) and then I sometimes tinker with the histogram, pulling the ends in or out depending on the reading and/or quality of the shot.

Although, I should note that I do edit all my scans in Photoshop after they’ve been scanned in. I usually don’t color correct film shots unless they’re really wacky, but I am really bad with dust so I clone those out in ACR. And, sometimes, I’ll sharpen and do slight curves adjustments as well, treating it like any other shot, until I’m satisfied with how it looks.

Hope that helps! Scanning surely can be a pain in the ass, but I’ve somehow come to enjoy it these days. :)

Sorry it took me so long to reply

Thank you so much for the help, since February I’ve started scanning at 1200 DPI and not using any of the digital ice or sharpening in the epson scan software but doing it in photoshop instead and my scans have been looking a ton better :)

thank you so much for sharing this with us. a wonderful addition to our group.
